South Norfolk Council recognise how important it is for our elderly residents to stay in their own homes for as long as possible and sometimes a small change can make a big difference.

The Council’s Handyperson+ scheme supports residents with a wide range of small household repairs and minor adaptation work.

The experienced team can help with many tasks including fitting key safes, fall prevention adaptions, smoke alarms, grab rails and better lighting. They can also offer advice on staying warm during cold weather.

As well as small works, the handyperson will chat to residents during a visit to see if they would benefit from any additional help. They have an in-depth knowledge of grants, allowances and services a resident may be eligible for.

In addition, the team can direct residents to relevant community support, including social clubs or events in the local area to help combat loneliness.

You may be eligible for the service free of charge if;

• You are over 65
• Have a long-term condition or disability AND
• Receive either Housing Benefit, Guaranteed Pension Credit or Universal Credit.

You may be eligible for our handyperson service with an hourly charge of £10.32 if;

• You are over 65 AND
• Have a long-term condition or disability

You may be eligible for our handyperson service with an hourly charge of £20.78 if;

• You are under 65 you have no long-term condition or disability.

This does not include the cost of any materials.

come and celebrate our Christmas Concert with us on Saturday 9 December at 7.00 pm in St John’s Church, Harleston IP20 9AZ.  We’re singing Vivaldi Gloria and Christmas music including pieces by Saint Saens, Holst, Whitacre, Rutter, Berlioz and Drake, under the baton of our Music Director Justin Bindley, and with soloists Jo Westaway and Joanna Gamble.  There will be carols for you to sing with us too! Tickets (£15, including wine or fruit juice and a mince pie; accompanied children free) available from choir members, on the door on the night, or from Harleston Information Plus.

Our Spring Term begins on Monday 8 January 2024, so please come and sing with us – we’ll be rehearsing for our Summer Concert on 29 June 2024.  There are no auditions, and music is provided free. Practices are on a Monday evening 7.30 pm- 9.30 pm, in The London Road Church, Harleston IP20 9BH. Parking is available in The Original Factory Shop (TOFS), almost opposite the church.

Pulham Market, Tattlepot Road – Local Member funded drainage works

Tattlepot Road in Pulham Market will be closed for two weeks from October 23 for necessary drainage works, the work will be outside Selwyn Court, and there will be a signed diversion route for the entirety of the work.

The diversion route is as follows: Tattlepot Road, Bank Street, The Green, Station Road, Semere Lane, A140 Ipswich Road, Tivertshall Road.

The County Council thanks people for their patience while this drainage improvement work is carried out.

The work which will cost £20,150 will be carried out by Norfolk County Council’s Community and Environmental Services Department and their contractors.

Harleston & District u3a’s monthly talk, on Wednesday 18 October at 2.00 pm in St John’s Church, Harleston IP20 9AZ, will be given by Baroness Elaine Murphy, who was made a life peer in June 2004, with a specific interest in mental health and ageing issues; she sits as a Crossbencher.  Her talk will focus on Wingfield: Suffolk’s Forgotten Castle and the lives of those who have lived there and who were important in shaping England, including the Wingfields and the de la Poles. Harleston Choral Society– began singing again on 4 September after our summer break and our very successful two-day August workshop.  It’s never too late to join us, so do come along to the London Road Church in Harleston IP20 9BH, where we meet for practices on a Monday evening from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. The National Grid has this week launched the second non-statutory consultation on Norwich to Tilbury (formerly known as East Anglia GREEN). They are proposing to build approximately 183 km of
transmission infrastructure from Norwich to Tilbury as part of The Great Grid Upgrade.
The second non-statutory consultation will run for eight weeks, closing on 21 August 2023.
They are still at an early stage of developing their proposals for this project. They are asking for feedback on their preferred draft alignment, which shows potential positions for overhead lines and associated pylons, underground cables, cable sealing end compounds (where overhead lines are joined to underground cables) and connection substations.
To confirm, South Norfolk Council raised an Objection to the last consultation.
One of the issues/concerns raised was the lack of public consultation events with only one being held in Mulbarton for the whole of South Norfolk. They have confirmed that they will be holding three events at Diss, Tibenham and Tasburgh.

The Public event being held at the Diss Youth & Community Centre, Shelfanger Road, Diss IP22 4EH, will take place on 7th July 2023, 2-7pm.

Webinars will also be held on 5th July, 1-2pm, 25th July, 7-8pm, 12th August, 10-11am and 17th August, 10-11am.

Harleston & District u3a invites you to join us for our monthly talk, on Wednesday 21 June, at 2.00 pm in St John’s Church, Harleston IP20 9AZ.  Our speaker is Peter Metcalf, well known to Harleston u3a members.  Peter will be telling the story of Tommies in America – Understated, Underpaid and Over There, the account of the tour of the USA and Mexico in 1943 by the British 1st Composite Anti-Aircraft Demonstration Battery RA, illustrated with photos from the period.
