Harleston Choral Society returned from our Easter break 28 April, and we’re now on countdown for the final few weeks of rehearsals for our Summer Concert on Saturday 28 June in Harleston Sancroft Academy. We’ll be singing Carl Orff Carmina Burana with professional soloists and orchestra, and the school’s choir. This will be the highlight of our 25th anniversary year, celebrating 25 years of wonderful music. Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings, 7.30 – 9.30 pm, in The London Road Church (formerly The Harleston Methodist Church) at London Road, Harleston, IP20 9BH. Parking is available in The Original Factory Shop (TOFS) car park opposite on London Road, Harleston, IP20 9BZ.

Another ‘can’t miss’ date for your diaries: a ‘Come and Sing Messiah’ Workshop on Saturday 16 August, in St James Village Hall IP19 0HP, open to all. And to round off the year, our Christmas concert on Saturday 6 December, back in St John’s Church. Throughout the year we’ll also be setting up display panels in various locations, showing HCS’s history, the many people who’ve been involved with the choir over the years, and choir members’ memories. The successful applicant will possess good administration, IT and communications skills and should be suitably qualified (ideally with or be willing to obtain CiLCA – the Certificate in Local Council Administration.) Full training and support will be provided for this role, together with a handover period with our current Clerk/Responsible Financial Officer.

Main duties include, but are not limited to:
• Arranging, publicising, and attending one Council meeting a month on 2nd Monday of each month (usually in the village Memorial Hall)
• Preparing agendas, meeting documentation, and writing minutes
• Providing advisory support to the Council
• Attending to all correspondence including letters, telephone, and emails
• Being the point of contact in relation to all burial ground and playing field matters
• Acting administrator for the Pulham Market Speed Watch Group and providing reports from the Parish Councils speed awareness machine data.
• Monitoring and updating the Council on relevant planning applications and responding where required
• Maintaining Council files and records
• Updating the Council website and village noticeboard
• Managing Council assets, including maintenance, grass cutting and insurance
• Maintaining and checking village defibrillators
• Liaising with District and County Councillors and members of the public
• Acting as the Responsible Financial Officer. Management of the Council’s finances including preparing the budget, payment of invoices, reclaiming VAT and end of year accounts

The position is available from middle of April 2025 (flexible handover period to be mutually agreed). The position is for 40 hours per month (approx. 10 flexible hours per week) including one evening meeting each month. A laptop, printer and dedicated landline will be provided together with an allowance for working from home.

Salary will be paid in accordance with experience and qualifications within the National Joint Council Salary Scale rates and will range from SCP 19 (currently £16.10 hour) – SCP 24 (currently £17.79 hour).

Broadland District Council and South Norfolk Council are seeking views on their draft joint Custom and Self-Build Housing Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).

The draft SPD provides guidance and information for people wanting to submit planning applications for self and custom build, including detail regarding the interpretation and implementation of policies in the Greater Norwich Local Plan (GNLP) which was adopted in March 2024

Paper copies of the document and response forms will also be available at local libraries in Broadland and South Norfolk, and at the Millennium Library in Norwich.

The consultation closes at 5pm on Friday 21 March. After this date, all the responses received will be considered and amendments made to the SPD as appropriate. We hope to be able to adopt the final SPD in Summer 2025

Harleston & District u3a invites you to our April 2025 talk Walking into Grandma’s Kitchen in 1940s Madras, given by Jenny Mallin. Jenny was winner of “Best in World Cookbook” by the Gourmand World Cookbook Society for 2017, and she is a regular speaker to a broad variety of groups looking for an interesting and unique talk on her British Raj family. We’ll discover how enticed they were by those exotic ingredients found in India, which with the help and careful consideration of their native cook, produced a different kind of cuisine.
